TYPHOID FEVER – DIETARY MANAGEMENT

                                         Typhoid is a bacterial disease and is considered to be one of the prime contagious diseases in the world. Caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi, it is transmitted through contaminated food or water. The bacteria affect the intestine, causing ulcers. The symptoms of typhoid include fever, constipation, sore throat, chills, fatigue, weakness, slow heart rate, uneasiness, diarrhoea, etc.

                                          Typhoid fever patients has digestive tract problem like vomiting and diarrhea. But, by a good food management and diet will help speed up the healing process.

What are some disease-related nutritional problems of typhoid fever?

  1. Loss of protein in the network as much as 250-500 grams of muscle tissue every day
  2. Glycogen reserves are fast depleting and disturbed fluid balance
  3. On the gastrointestinal tract is inflamed / irritated / diarrhea in a long time then it will interfere with absorption of nutrients
  4. Ulceration / intestinum severe injury to the prolonged illness can cause intestinal bleeding and even perforation.
  5. Provision of aspirin or aspirin to reduce fever derivatives may be irritating to the intestinal tract which can aggravate the intestines are injured / infected.

How is the Diet Management?

                          Patients do not have to eat porridge but the principle is easily refined foods consumed and absorbed. However, in patients who are still afraid to consume rice, the patient can eat soft foods or strain, the principle is largely ad libitum diet (based on the will of the patient). These foods should be thoroughly cooked (not hard) or semi-solid. Food is easily absorbed by the characteristics of the intestine physiologically will retire from working too hard. Giving gradually in the interval 2-3 hours will provide adequate nutrition without burdening the gut rather than giving a lot of work at once (a little but often).

What are foods that recommended for patient?

  1. The consumption of lots of juice, soup, watery food  lots of mineral water (> 2.5 l)

  3. Foods with high biological value protein such as eggs, meat paste, fish, poultry, cheese, etc.
  4. Refined foods with high sugar content such as: honey, jam, candy / sugar, jelly, grass jelly, and fro, nata de coco, seaweed etc.
  5. Low-fiber foods, ripe fruit, potatoes, etc. in order to decrease intestinal motility

  6. Vegetables with a fine fiber / soluble dietary fiber: spinach, squash, turnips, squash / squash, bitter melon, eggplant, carrots.

 

What are some foods that a patient should avoid?

  1. Which has a strong flavor such as: onion, garlic, food that is burned
  2. Containing compounds that can irritate: a too sharp seasoning, chili, chili sauce, hot sauce, vinegar
    Fried food should be avoided
  3. Foods that are inherent:  sticky rice etc.
  4. Foods that cause gas: jackfruit, durian, pineapple cauliflower etc.
  5. Foods with high fiber content. Vegetables high in fiber / non-soluble dietary fiber: vegetables such as kale, papaya, and sweet potatoes, spinach stems and whole grains (brown rice, mashed rice, corn).

Certain home remedies and dietary precautions can be of great help in managing typhoid fever and its symptoms. They can also aid in fast recovery.
Prefer Fruit Juices

  • Typhoid fever causes a lot of weakness. It is advisable to take complete rest.
  • Drink boiled water to get rid of typhoid fever. Drink the water when it is still warm.
  • Grind 4 basil leaves, 7 black pepper tablets and 7 strands of saffron into a paste. Prepare small tablets from the paste, and take these 2-3 times during the day.

  • Drinking buttermilk is a good cure for typhoid fever. Add some fresh coriander juice to it for better results.
  • Mash a banana and add some honey to it. The honey-flavoured banana tastes good, helps to restore energy lost due to the illness, and aids fast recovery.
  • Banana is a wonder food for recovering from the fever. Add mashed banana to a glass of butter milk and consume this daily.
  • You can also consume orange juice, as it keeps the body hydrated and cool.
  • Pomegranate juice also helps to rehydrate and energise a typhoid fever patient.

  • You might get bored drinking the same fruit juice every day; include a variety of fruit juices in your diet. Apart from oranges and pomegranate, apples and sweet limes are also good for typhoid patients.
  • Include vegetable soups in your diet. However, they should be bland; do not add any spices or condiments that might irritate the intestines. Make sure you boil the soup properly and strain it before consumption.
  • A glass of warm water with a spoonful of honey added to it is a great remedy that helps to soothe the digestive system. Drink it as frequently as you can, as it also restores energy.

  • Boil around 5 cloves in 2 litres of water till only 1 litre of water is left. Remove it from the stove, and let the flavour steep in for some time, and then filter. Sip this concoction throughout the day.
·         It is advisable to consume food that is very easy to digest, if possible a diet of maximum liquids and fruit juices. Once the patient starts recovering, start including food items like a well-cooked khichdi, curd rice and kheer.
